A Quick Update 13 months, 4, and 30.

The boys are ever changing.  Literally 2 weeks after learning to walk, Everett is now running everywhere!  It is so hard to keep up with him.  He has a very headstrong personality, but is already learning what “No” and “Stop” mean.  He will stop what he is doing and turn around.  This doesn’t happen 100% of the time of course, but does happen very often.

He has found out where the food cabinet is (we currently don’t have a pantry), and has learned to open it, get out his raisins and eat!

He currently has 7 teeth.

If you tell Everett to wipe his face after he eats, he will.  He can also clean up his high chair.  It’s so cute.

Last night while Jeff was brushing Elijah’s teeth, I was brushing Everett’s.  All of a sudden he started saying, “Ahhhhh” and opening his mouth (which he has never done when I try to brush).

He likes to pick up play phones, long legos, and often plastic sheep toys and pretend they are phones.  He puts them up to his ear and talks. haha!

Everett loves the water, so we play in the little pool outside daily.  He wants to be outside all of the time and runs all over the yard.  Most days he has a fish net in hand carrying it around, scooping up stuff.

Everett is 13 months old.

Elijah is 4 years old.

Elijah has started preschool this year and is doing so well.  He is very eager to learn and please.  He has already started recognizing some letters, which he couldn’t before school.  He will see an A on t.v. and shout out what it is.  He probably knows around 7 to 10 letters.

Jeff just taught Elijah to whistle.  Apparently Jeff and I whistle a lot.  Elijah kept squealing trying to mimic the sound, so Jeff taught him how to properly whistle.  I seriously think I was 7 or 8 before I learned!

He also just learned to use scissors, so we are working on some fine motor skills.  He still memorizes verses like crazy.  So far he knows.  Gen 1:1, Eph 6:1, I Thes 5:17, Heb 13:8, Prov 22:6, Phil 4:4, John 3:16, Rom 10:17, John 8:32, Matt 6:33, and Gal 2:20.  I might have missed a few.  He usually learns a verse within a few days, especially if there is a song that goes a long with it, but we don’t give him new ones that often.

Elijah loves having a baby brother.  It’s so nice that they can somewhat play together.  Of course everyday has the, “MOM baby brother is tearing this or that up, or MOM! Everett is knocking my blocks down”.  Typical big brother little brother stuff.  Elijah has so much fun making Everett laugh.  It’s like that is his goal everyday.  It’s so worth it, because Everett gives these huge belly laughs, just for his brother!

They have both been sleeping through the night in the same room for a couple of months now.  It. Is. AWESOME!  They get 10 to 11 hours most nights.  Mama is in heaven.  Sorry to brag, I just didn’t know if this day would come.

Elijah is still in love with food.  From the time he wakes up, until he goes to sleep it’s what he talks about and wants the most.  If we are every going anywhere or going to visit a friend, the first thing he asks is, “are we going to eat”?  I think it’s a comfort thing.  We try not to stress too much, but he will tend to overeat until sick.  The doctors told us to monitor his portions so he’s eating more of what a four year old should instead of a 24 year old.  He will continually eat even when full, and get’s very upset if you take his plate away with food on it.  We have never told him he has to eat everything, just for him to eat until his tummy feels full.  It’s difficult at times, when he’s crying of stomach pains and has to take frequent trips to the potty.

I’m only sharing this for those of you interested in foster care or adoption.  Sometimes children develop these habits.  It could be for comfort, for control, or any other reasons.  But, it’s your job as a parent to be gentle and easy with them.  Try to teach them to listen to their bodies so they don’t hurt it.  It is often difficult at times to eat with others, because they think it’s amazing that our boys tend to eat so much.  They will compliment how MUCH they are eating, so Elijah in particular will eat more, because he thinks it’s a good thing.  It’s not.  We have to deal with him in pain afterwards, or puking because he ate so much.  It’s not a fun thing for kids to overeat.

I’m not sure how it works with most kids, I just know how things work with my kids.  I’ve spent the last year and 2 months getting to know them.  Elijah feeds off praise and positivity.  Attention.  If you compliment something he is doing, he will do it a million times longer, louder, better to get you to say more things to him.  It’s not a bad thing, but as adults we just have to monitor and help him.

Everyone wants to treat adopted kids the same, and you can to a certain extent.  BUT they are not the same.  A lot of them grew up in multiple homes, some have lost all their family.  Others are from different countries so we all look and talk funny to them.  It’s super scary for our kids.  A lot of adults don’t understand.  It can make parenting more difficult at times, but it can also provide learning opportunities for the kids and also the adults who don’t know any better.

It’s always best to think before you speak in any situation…

On to a different subject.  Jeff will be turning 30 in a couple of days!  Whoooohoooo!  I planned all sorts of things, but it seems not much is going to work out.  We shall see what the day/night holds, I’ll try to remember to update.  He’s doing fine by the way. 🙂

Baby Everett You are 13 Months Old

Wow.  This last month we have seen so many changes in you.  Just yesterday a ton of stuff happened.  Most importantly you finally said “Mama!”  I was so happy.  You were just be bopping along and said it.  You’ve said it a few times before, but it was when you were crying, so I didn’t count it!

You are getting in your seventh tooth.  You are in a lot of pain, and didn’t sleep through the night last night.  That’s the first time in like 2 months.  We had to bring you into our bed in the middle of the night.  I felt so sorry for you.

So, you discovered the toilet last month, but last night you discovered how to throw your toothbrush in it!  You were suppose to be brushing your teeth!  I’m sure this is the first of many things you will throw in the toilet, but I pray it’s a while before you learn to flush them…though you have flushed the toilet a few times too…

We just came back from a week vacation.  Before we left you were walking around pretty well.  Now, you are running.  I think you think your are the boss of the house!  I literally cannot do anything until you are asleep.  All I do is follow you around and make sure you don’t eat dog food, play in the water, fall in the bathtub, pull out all the dishes, step on the printer (we have no room on our desk), and the such like.

You seriously are the happiest baby.  Last night when you were fussing, I knew something was wrong, because you are always so happy go lucky.

You love to wrestle your brother.  Elijah’s not really use to that, so he’s not quiet sure what to do.

You LOVE your puppies, and scream in a high pitched voice when you see them.

You will repeat almost anything.  You just said fish this morning after I did.  Words you know: okay, hey, yeah, uh-oh, bye bye, dada, mama.  You have repeated: love you, and tons of others.

You give kisses and are starting to blow kisses.  You’ve always given me kisses, but now you are sharing your kisses with others.  It’s adorable.

Your favorite foods right now are corn on the cob and granny smith apples.

You love to play with cars, balls, brother’s guitar, nets (as in to catch fish), and the drums with daddy.

Here are the 12 month pictures from last month.  I didn’t post them, because I had posted so many birthday pictures.  I’ll add some shots from the last month on this post later.

We love you sweet baby!

Yay!!!  Jeff built Elijah this amazing bench to lay on and read.  Now he has the perfect little reading nook!  I love it, and he loves it, everybody loves it!  It’s so nice to have a place to store all his books.  We’ve already filled it up!  The basket in the middle has puzzles in it.  I love you hubby!

Doing the No Poo Thing Again

I think last time I tried it for two weeks, and quit.  I’m sure you’ve seen all the blog posts about people giving up shampoo and traditional conditioner and using baking soda and Apple Cider vinegar.  If not, it really is just to give your hair a break from all the chemicals we put in it and to let your hair become shiny with your natural oils again.

I have dry curly hair.  Lately it’s been doing some crazy mess.  I contribute it to Everett, chewing, pulling, and spitting up on it.  My hair is having a hard time.  It’s impossible to keep him out of my hair when he’s on my back most of the day or using it to pull himself up to standing position the rest of the day.  I’ve threatened to “go pixie” multiple times, but I really want to let it grow out.

In comes, no poo.  I haven’t been happy with any of the sulfate, paraben free shampoos I’ve been using, so I thought I’d give it a go again.  The best blog that I’ve seen for curly hair is this: small bird studios.  Here is the post with the actual directions and measurements.  I think last time I used too much baking soda and not enough ACV.  Also, I really want to curl my hair without it looking frizzy and without applying heat.  So this is what I did after I showered.

definitely going to try this!

I also added my favorite essential oils to the ACV and water.  When I got out of the shower I dried my hair with Jeff’s t-shirt.  The only thing I put on my hair was Argan oil.  Then I put it up in this headband thing.  Later in the day it was drying slowly, so I blow dried it on low for just a couple of minutes while it was still in the headband.  It started looking frizzy, so I took it down, put more Argan oil and then put it back up in the headband.  After I took a nap I let it all down and it was completely dry and really curly.  Here is a picture of it the next day:

My hair has never looked this good curled, not even with heat.  It’s always super frizzy, so I was shocked.  Again, I know I’ve only done this one day.  It has been about 3 days and I haven’t washed it again.  It’s still not frizzy or oily.  Here is what it looks like today:

Also, I must mention that last time I did this, even after the first shampoo, my hair looked oily.  I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been sulfate free for a few years now or what, but after I shampooed with the baking soda (I didn’t put it on my ends), and conditioned with the ACV (I didn’t put it on my roots), my hair looked SO clean!  No oil.  I’ve only washed it once, so I don’t know if I’ll go through a grunge period like last time or not.  Maybe I’ll stick with it and blog about it….but then again…I’m pretty lazy.  Oh, and the two kids thing.

Baby Everett You are 8 Months Old

and you look more like a little boy than a baby!  You are so tall!  You were 8 months old on the 29th of March.  It is now April.  We went out of town the day after you turned 8 months, so I’m just now blogging about it.

Dear Everett, you are my wild child.  As we speak you are trying to flip over your Excersaucer.  Just a few minutes before that you found out how to jump out of your crib onto our bed.  You wiggle, squirm, bounce, and everything else when we hold you.  You can crawl so fast, and get to anything you want.  Right now you love to crawl towards laundry baskets, the coffee table, the couch, and anything else you can pull up on!

You love people.  I mean really love them.  You have never met a stranger, and give everyone a BIG grin.  You will let anyone hold you.  You still favor Mama and Dada, and of course big brother.  You hate it when I leave the room.  You will crawl after me from room to room.  When I am in the same room as you, you crawl all over me and pull up by pulling on my clothes….you do this to anyone that will let you.

You just cut your first tooth!  It took about a week to break the skin, and it’s still not all the way out.  I could tell it hurt you a lot.  We tried to do everything we could to soothe you.  I’ve been carrying you a lot and that stops you from crying.  You also have only been waking up once a night for the past week and a half!  The whole family is excited to get a bit more sleep!

You are incredibly good at peek-a-boo.  You pull the covers up and down over your face.  It’s probably the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen.

We had a busy month!  You got to go to the zoo in Montgomery.  We met your friend Callie and Elijah’s friend Caleb.  We had a blast looking at the animals.

We just got back in town after a trip to Memphis Tennessee.  It was your first time leaving the state!  You did so well, despite the lack of naps you got.  We went to visit daddy’s college for a lectureship.  We ate at many restaurants, got to see lots of friends, and you even played disc golf for the first time!  You were on Mama’s back of course, but I got to play about 8 baskets with you back there until you fell asleep.

You are eating SO much.  You have loved everything we have fed you.  I think you are going to have a big appetite like your brother.

The biggest news of your life (and ours) right now is that we should be signing papers this month for your adoption!  We are praying everything goes smoothly and we can go to court real soon to make it all official!  We love you so much little guy.  You make us so happy!

Fall 007

Elijah had so much fun at the Fall festival downtown.  I really wish I could share pictures of little E, but alas, I cannot.  One day this blog will be blown up with his sweet tiny face!  Everett will be 3 months old on the 29th!  I can’t believe how much he has grown.  He is filling out, especially in his face.  I was able to capture him rolling over from his belly to his back today, on my camera.  Sunday he started rubbing his eyes when he got sleepy for the first time.  He grabbed his foot this past week too!  He’s slobbering and chewing on his tiny knuckles.  I don’t know if that means teeth are in our near future or not.

Elijah is doing well.  He is loving the cooler weather because he gets to wear jackets!  We bought a firepit and he is super excited about roasting marshmallows.  I’m excited to show you all our Halloween outfits…but that will have to wait.

We are loving being a family of four!Fall 017

Always Remember, There Was Nothing Worth Sharing, Like the Love that Let Us Share Our Name

Wow.  What did we ever do to deserve this life?  I look back a mere 3 months ago and I cannot believe where we are now.  Jeff and I have wanted a family for sooo long, and God has now blessed us with not one but two beautiful boys.   The most perfect boys.  Every time I look into their sweet faces it takes my breath away.  Elijah is so incredibly smart and complex.  Everyday I am amazed at the things he says, asks, and knows.  His tender heart, his zeal for knowledge, his vast love, his timely manners.  He is beautiful.

I believe everyone has a right to brag about their children.  I know all children are precious, gifts from God.  It’s just this child.  He just.  I don’t know.  If I could dream up a perfect child he wouldn’t even come close to Elijah.  He’s just that good.  That pure.  It’s like God literally found the best child in the whole world and dropped him off on our doorstep.  Most of the time I forget that he is only 3.  He seems to comprehend on at least a 10 year old level.  I know people think we are strict or mean or just plain hard on him at times, but we know him.  We know his capabilities, we know his comprehension, we know he is worth it, so we hold him to a very high standard.  We expect him to behave.  He thrives with structure and discipline and has flourished in our home because of it.

There is an old saying that says, “Good things come to those who wait.”  Like Hannah in first Samuel, I prayed and prayed for years for a child.  I begged and pleaded with the Lord.  I would often read this chapter in the bible to give me comfort and peace, I knew God would answer my prayers.  And he did.  He brought us Elijah at the exact right time when he needed us the most and we needed him the most.

Psalm 37:7  “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him”

So, in celebration of his beautiful life and our beautiful life together as a forever family, we threw a big ole’ party!  I’m first going to post the decorations.  I enlisted the help of an incredible party, planning, lady.  Trust me if you have a wedding, birthday, any event, you should call her.  She is the best!

Elijah’s favorite song is, “Jesus Loves the Little Children of the World.”  So, we ran with it.  We wanted this to be about families and about adoption.  There are children all over the world that need good Christian homes.  Adoption is a blessing.  Adoption is love.  So, we have globes, maps, and international flags everywhere to celebrate all the beautiful children who need us and need God.  Please consider opening your home to one/some of these children.  If you have any questions about adoption, particularly state adoption, comment or email us!  Adoption is our favorite thing to talk about!  It brought us a family!

The door decor.  I spray painted an 11×14 frame from a thrift store navy blue.  I bought an MDF letter from Hobby Lobby, scrapbook paper from Oriental trading (travel pack), Mod Podged it on there.  Hung the letter from jute with is hotglued to a strip of fabric (from Hobby Lobby.), I made a paper doll chain and taped it on.  This is something cute that we can hang on the outside of his room now.

Pre-Party Photos 078 Pre-Party Photos 081When I searched for Pinterest ideas for adoption parties not much came up, but one thing that did was this “It’s O-fish-al” saying on a bag of Swedish Fish.  We opted for goldfish.  I just printed it on oval labels and stuck it to a tag made by a Circuit machine we borrowed.

Ms. Michelle made this super cute sign out of some scrapbook supplies she found at Hobby Lobby.
Pre-Party Photos 085This was our “photobooth” of sorts.  The map is a one of a kind that we borrowed, made to fit on a bulletin board.

Our family table.  I made the bunting.  We had Elijah’s adoption book I wrote out for everyone to write in a wish.  I painted a tree for everyone to sign and fingerprint, and then Ms.  Michelle made us a family tree where we had pictures of the boys with all their family!

Pre-Party Photos 097On the food table we had hamburgers, hotdogs, coleslaw, corn, baked beans, mac n cheese, chips and dip.   I picked only foods he LOVED.  He ate the coleslaw first of course.  I also had chocolate milk for him to drink!

E's Adoption Party Everett 9 weeks 059The dessert table with chocolate cupcakes with green icing (earth), white cupcakes with blue icing (water).  We also had ice cream for the kiddos.  Jeff built the pallet sign and I painted it.  It’s going over Everett’s crib when he moves into the nursery.  I’ll probably make him a banner with his name and hang it on it.

Pre-Party Photos 104Kid’s table.  I had cardstock and travel stamp stickers (Oriental Trading) on each spot, with dino crayons that I made from this mold, so they could make their own placemats.  The kids could take home a balloon, international flag, and goldfish favors.

Always remember, there was nothing worth sharing , Like the love that let us share our name.

Pre-Party Photos 099This table had a photo album, books about adoption, suitcase to hold cards, a wooden name train that we bought him off Amazon, a wooden globe that fit 8 tiny children in it (Oriental Trading).  We added a red wagon on the side to hold presents, it filled up quite quickly!  Elijah didn’t even know they were his, and picked up two (after he opened them), and asked if he could bring them home.  I had to tell him that ALL the presents were his!  His eyes got so big!

E's Adoption Party Everett 9 weeks 291The John Deere tractor set was a HUGE hit!  We got us a country bumpkin!

A super big thank you to everyone who showed up and also to those who couldn’t, but wanted to be there.  We love you all so much and you are so important to our family!  A big shout out to our friends that help us set up and take down everything (you know who you are.)  Thank you also to those who contributed food, helped serve and brought presents.  We are truly humbled by the love you have shown our family and most importantly our son.

We love you all!
